Study on fish community in Nong Luang, Chiang Rai province was carried out to determine diversity and abundance of fish and water quality in Nong Luang and to determine the changes in fish abundance in term of catch per unit effort (CPUE). Fish samples were collected using 6 sets of gill net which are different in mesh size. Fish community structures in 3 zones of sampling in Nong Luang were also compared. Results showed that fish diversity and abundance in Nong Luang were less than those in the past. Twelve families, 26 genus and 29 species of fish were found in this study. Spatial gill net CPUEs were 59.25, 27.67 and 31.70 g/100 square m net area/h for upper, middle and lower zone, respectively. Temporal gill net CPUEs were 40.06, 33.32, 18.46 and 66.31g/100 square m net area/h for July, September, November 2005, and January 2006, respectively. Mean diversity index was 2.33+-0.22. Mean richness index was 4.66+-0.69. And mean evenness index was 0.76+-0.66. In addition, it was found that water quality in Nong Luang is suitable for the living of aquatic animals.
