In the 2004-2007 period cultivated and tested for germination energy and germination were 6 stabilized monogerm MS lines, 6 MS-simple hybrids of the same MS lines with a second O type sterility maintainer, and their diploid and triploid simple and triple-cross hybrids. The second O type increases insignificantly the germination energy of the maternal component, but this does not affect the germination energy of the simple and triple-cross hybrid combinations with diploid and tetraploid multigerm pollinators. Because of the higher heterozygousity most of the MS-simple hybrids have higher germination than the relevant MS lines. But in simple cases only the triple-cross hybrids with multigerm pollinators have higher germination of seeds. The conclusion is that in the germination energy and germination of the simple and triple-cross hybrids of sugar beet there is no positive effect of the inclusion of a second O type in the breeding scheme of the maternal components.
