From agricultural point of view Bulgaria has insufficient and uncertain water resources. Тemperature sums of the potential vegetation period within the last decades and almost all over the country submit to a positive tendency and the rainfall sums - to a negative one. This is evidence for current drought processes, determined by the global climate change. The increasing atmospheric drought causes an increase in the water losses by evaporation and a decrease in the soil water content. It is of particular interest how the evapotranspiration of crops is affected by both phenomena in combination with the physiological response of the plant. The paper deals with the impact of the contemporary climate changes upon the air humidity conditions, open water evaporation and reference evapotranspiration in Bulgaria. The data processed are collected from 42 agrometeorological stations over the agricultural territory of the country and cover the 1971-2000 period. The results show that the evapotranspiration in the different climatic regions of the country has increased with one to one and a half design application depth for the potential vegetation period. This investigation will contribute for amplification of farming strategies and agricultural production management with proper irrigation scheduling and suitable agricultural practices in adapted to the climate changes of the region. The results would be useful for elaborating a basis for new project standards of designing irrigation networks.
