Nowadays, milk yield improvement is the main aim of the Manchega sheep breeding program. However, some other traits with a known economic value could be of interest. Prolificacy, defined as number of lambs born, is one of these traits and its interest on Manchega breed is due to that production is supported by a geographical indication (GI) that increase its value. Although, heritability of prolificacy is low (h2=0.03) and expected genetic progress would be low also, in some sheep breeds a gene with a major effect on prolificacy has been described allowing a considerable improvement if a selection program on these genes was established. The objective of this work was the study of the genetic progress for prolificacy in Manchega sheep looking for some animals that could be carriers of a major gene for prolificacy. Once candidate animals were found, a future study to search for the presence of a major gene on these animals will be carried out.
