The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the cereal and the fibrous ingredients in the diet on the adaptation of piglets to weaning. A total of 96 piglets (9.07 +/- 0.36kg BW, 26 d old) were distributed into two dietary treatments based (60%) on rice (R) or barley (B) with or without fibre supplementation (4% of wheat bran and 2% of sugarbeet pulp), with 8 replicates of 3 animals per treatment, in a 2x2 factorial design. Piglets fed on diet R ate more (P = 0.03) and tended to have (P = 0.067) a higher final BW. Piglets fed on diet B had heavier (P < 0.01) GIT and large intestine than piglets fed on diet R. Fibre supplementation did not affect performance but also resulted in a heavier large intestine and decreased (P < 0.05) the ammonia concentration as compared to non-supplemented diets. Diet B showed a higher proportion of propionic acid (P = 0.001) and a lower proportion of isoacids (P = 0.007) as compared to diet R. The experimental diets also modified the microbial counts in the faeces. Diet B tended (P < 0.10) to have a lower number of coliforms than diet R and fibre supplementation increased the number of Enterococci (P = 0.015).
