Urea is the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer in the world. But its recovery is vey low due to its rapid hydrolysis and subsequent nitrification. An incubation experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of application of different parts of pyrethrum (flower, leaf and stem) powder on urea hydrolysis and nitrification. The experiment was conducted at 5/4 field capacity (soil moisture content) and 16oC incubation temperature. The results revealed that the formation of nitrite and nitrate was hindered significantly (P0.05) when pyrethrum powder was applied together with urea as compared to the control treatment. Likewise, the formation of ammonium was significantly delayed at the beginning of the incubation particularly when powder from pyrethrum flower was applied. This preliminary study indicated the need fro further investigation on the potential role of pyrethrum in delaying and retarding the hydrolysis and nitrification of urea and promote fertilizer N use efficiency of crops under different conditions.
