A comparison of various oil palm nursery techniques under conditions prevalent in Ghana.

Results are presented of a number of oil palm nursery experiments carried out at the Oil Palm Research Centre, Kade, Ghana, in 1969-1971. Polybag nurseries are many aspects superior to ordinary field nurseries. Highly significant differences were found in growth, per cent blast disease and per cent transplantable seedlings. Shading during the period September- February is required in all types of nurseries in Ghana. The castor oil plant provides an adequate and inexpensive shade. Dry-season field nurseries should in Ghana be established in August instead of October to prevent a heavy blast attack. Costs of raising oil palm seedlings in polybags compare favourably to those of other types of nurseries. Polybag seedlings also establish much better after transplanting to the field. This was convincingly demonstrated by growth recordings taken 12 months after planting.
