Soil structures produced by tillage implements and their effects on soil water

Soil structures produced by tillage implements were measured in 2 years. Fourteen tillage treatments involving the use of mouldboard plough, disc plough, scarifier, combine drill and rotary cultivator were carried out. Effects of different soil structures on soil water content were studied. Ploughing followed by harrowing with tine implements produced finer soil structure and more voids (small than 8 mm in diameter) than other tillage treatments. Results showed that soils given these tillage treatments had more water content. Apparently, voids larger than 8 mm in diameter were mainly responsible for water loss from tilled soil.
