Cassava peels with urea and molasses as dry season supplementary feed for cattle

In the investigation conducted at the University of Ghana's Agricultural Research Station, Nungua, on the Accra plains, 18 crossbred bullocks (three each of Jersey x West African Shorthorn, Jersey x N'dama, Jersey x Sokoto Gudale, Freisian x West African Shorthorn, Freisian x N'dama and Freisian x Sokoto Gudale) were randomly assigned according to breed to a control .and two test groups. The control animals were allowed only normal grazing, while test groups 1 and 2 bullocks were fed on dried or ensiled cassava peels with urea and molasses respectively, in addition to normal grazing. The supplements were fed to test groups 1 and 2 at an average of 0.7 kg (dry matter basis per 100 kg body weight per animal each morning, prior to grazing. Average liveweight gain per animal per day at the end of 25 weeks was 0. 07 kg for the control group and 0.29 kg and 0_33 kg respectively, for test groups 1 and 2, suggesting that supplementation significantly improved liveweight gains (P=0_05). Results of this experiment suggest that, the hydrocyanic acid content of fresh cassava peels can be reduced to non-toxic levels for livestock consumption through sun-drying or ensiling.
