Some aspects of the biology of Cyperus rotundus L.

A study was carried out to find out more about the biology of Cyperus rotundus, a serious weed common and most prevalent among vegetable crops at the University Farm, Cape Coast, Ghana. Distribution of tubers of C. rotundus with depth of soil at two sites was determined. The top 15 cm of soil contained more tubers in both the disturbed and undisturbed sites (75 and90% respectively) though generally, the disturbed site had less tubers than the undisturbed site. Tubers collected at different depths had equal chances of sprouting and at the same rate. The extent of contact with the soil facilitated sprouting and those lying at the soil surface with least contact sprouted and established poorly. Exposure of the tubers to the weather killed them in about 20 days regardless of whether they were in the sun or in the shade. Tuber size and the regime of light had no effect on the sprouting capacity of the tubers. Research and development note. Received 29 Oct 81; revised 27 Nov 86.
