Maize production on the Accra plains
1966
Haizel, K.A., Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ghana, Legon.
There are possibilities of expanding maize cultivation on the Accra plains. The light textured soils of which the Nyigbenya-Hacho complex forms a significant part, offer an easy opportunity for a quick expansion of the crop.Rainfall seems to be a major limitation to maize cultivation at present. This can be overcome by choosing a variety adaptable to uncertain rainfall conditions. A review of previous maize varietal trials carried out in Southern Ghana has been made. Six varieties of maize (GS.l, GS.II,GS. III, Tsolo, Local White, Mex. 17) were tested. Mexican 17 came out outstandingly as the most high-yielding variety, and is recommended for the Accra Plains.
