Preliminary of some studies on woody species the phenology of Ghana

Special field studies were made for three consecutive years on a number of woody plants of Ghana with respect to the proper extent and frequency of their flowering and fruiting periods as well as their leaf-fall periods. Results on one hundred of the plants studied are presented m ~etal1and compared with information in the literature. The comparison shows that in most .cases there i~.no information on the flowering and fruiting periods in the Flora of West Tropical Africa and other literature while in other cases where there is some information, it is incorrect because of the fact that only ad hoc records were made by past and even present systematists and collectors as to the time of collection of a flower or fruit for description. Such ad hoc records of times of collection in the Floras gradually get adopted in other literature as periods of actual flowering and fruiting. Information on leaf-fall IS even more scanty.The results show that the one hundred species of woody plants are classifiable into five categories on the basis of the frequency of flowering of the species in a year as follows:48 of them (or 48%) flower once a year, 44 (or 44%) twice a year, 6 (or 6 %) three times a year, 1(or 1%) four times a year and finally 1 (or 1%) throughout t~e year. The rather high proportion of 44% of these woody species flowering twice a year is a striking phenomenon revealed in this work.A further report on the general pattern of the flowering periods throughout the year with special emphasis on the major flowering periods of the year will be reported later either in this Journal or elsewhere.
