Investigation on the efficiency of natural pheromone traps in monitoring and control of Carob moth Spectrobates(=Apomyelois) ceratoniae in Yazd

Carob moth is one of the most important pomegranate pests in Iran. The pest larvae feeds on pomegranate, reduce fruit quality, transmit saprophyte fungi and attract saprophyte insects. Considering characteristics of pomegranate fruit and mechanism of carob moth damage, chemical control of this pest is difficult. At present, the main methods of control are collection of infected fruits during the year, use of resistant varieties and biological control by trichogramma wasp. All of these methods have their own limitations. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate other possible control methods such as pheromone traps. Sex pheromone has been used for monitoring and controling of pests. In this study, natural pheromone (Virgin female) were used in sticky-tube and water traps.This study have down in Yazd province since 2000 for 2 years and the effect of trap height, number of moth in each trap and two kind of trap were examined. The results showed that the height of 1.5 meter and 2 virgin female moths per trap was suitable. There was no significant difference between sticky-tube and water traps capture. According to the population dynamic diagram, the first moth appeared at the end of April and separation of generation did not exist during the year. The maximum capture in 12 hours was 156 males per sticky-tube trap in the end of season.The method of attract and kill by using pheromone traps would cause mating disruption and decrease the number of fertile eggs which finaly reduce the pest damage.
