Evaluation of the practical use of sheep on rural development and the possibility of re-expansion of shepherds

The objectives of this study were to evaluate shepherd in Niigata as a way of rural development and to describe difficulty of it. Two times of the field survey were conducted at the direct sales store of farm products with grazing land for sheep in the different season. In May, many people come to watch the shearing a sheep. On the other hand, few people come to watch the sheep in grazing land in September. People who visited the store had interest to join the practical program using livestock. It seemed that to provide activities using sheep or wool are able to invite people from outside to rural area through the year. According to the interview with owners of sheep at the local, management of small number of sheep is not so difficult compare with the other kind of livestock. In conclusion, shepherd with continuous various activities for people, such as shearing and wool processing, could produce many chances to people coming to the local area and it is effective on the rural development. The management of sheep needs an appropriate grazing land and forage crops, but shepherd is possible in Niigata. It seemed to be effective that a practical use of sheep and its products for rural development and it could develop in the future.
