Optimum roundness of tool edge in veneer cutting of sugi [Cryptomeria japonica wood]

The effect of the roundness of cutting tool edge on the cutting performance in modeled veneer cutting of Sugi was investigated. The conditions of the radius of cutting tool edge were 0.3, 1, 3 micro m. The other purpose of this paper was to obtained the minimum chip thickness which could form the chip. The cutting force, machined surface profile, tool feed and rotational angle of workpieces were measured in veneer cutting process. The changes of the cutting force, the frictional angle on face, the frictional angle on back and the cutting error were analyzed. No chip produced with undeformed chip thickness when the frictional angle was larger than 90deg. For the radius of cutting tool edge being 0.3, 1, 3 micro m, the minimum chip thickness were 0.06, 0.2, 0.31 mm, respectively. In most sharpen edge that the radius of cutting tool edge was 0.3 micro m, the veneer cutting with nominal chip thickness 0.13, 0.26, 0.45, 0.72 and 0.89 mm produced perfectly continued chip. However, the veneer cutting with the nominal chip thickness 0.72, 0.89 mm produced the chip with processing defect. In this experiment, it is regarded that nominal chip thickness 0.3 - 0.5 mm as getting the good chips.
