Monitoring on H9N2 low pathogenic avian influenza vaccinated farms in Korea during 2007~2008

H9N2 low pathogenic avian influenza virus(LPAI) is one of the most prevalent avian diseases mainly in Asia. H9N2 subtype was first reported in Korea in 1996, which caused serious economic loss at domestic poultry industry, and has become endemic in poultry since 1999. For this reason, Korea government has conditionally permitted the use of inactivated vaccine derived from one selected Korean isolate. Monitoring as effective tools for the control of LPAI has been performed for vaccinated farms since starting the use of vaccine in the field in 2007. Total vaccine sales in 2008, as 31,121 doses were three times more increased than that of 2007. AI tetravalent and AI pentavalent vaccines have been used newly from 2008 with increase of AI monovalent and AI bivalent vaccines. Rate of vaccination at layer farms was greatly increased from 22.6% in 2007 to 47.3% in 2008. Comparison of vaccinated farms according to the nation-wide regions with chicken types and years was performed. For the use of vaccine at both layer farms and broiler farms, Gyeonggi was the most highest region during two years. Hemagglutination inhibition(HI) titers of vaccinated chickens were gradually improved and the rate of AI field infection in vaccinated chicken farms was remarkably decreased from 19% to 9% for this survey.
