Sexual influence of Vitamin A restriction in crossbred (Japanese black x holstein) beef cattle

The vitamin A control technique, improved in meat quality, is popularized in Japanese Black fattening. But the technique for crossbred (Japanese black x holstein) beef cattle is not built up. The present study was conducted to clarify the sexual influence under vitamin A restricted condition on plasma vitamin A concentration, feed intake and meat quality in crossbred heifer and steer. 1. Decrease in concentrate ratio of vitamin A in plasma was more remarkable in steers than in heifer for 5 months after the vitamin A restriction. 2. Decline in concentrates intakes were observed in cattle which vitamin A concentration in plasma decreased below 30IU/dl. The degree of decrease in concentrates intake were tended to be more serious in steers. 3. Compared with steers, greater rib eye area, rib thickness and marble score were observed for heifers. These results suggest that vitamin A restriction in steers need careful control compared to that in heifers, for higher responsiveness of vitamin A concentration in steers.
