Pathological aspects of the fluke (Eurytema pancreaticum) infected pancreas in the sheep

A pathological investigation was carried out on the pancreas in 2 sheep naturally infected by flukes. Grossly, the pancreas showed atrophic changes, and, due to the numerous flukes, a dark brownish protrusion of the affected ducts on the surface and a dilatation of the duct lumen were seen. The area of parasitization was restricted to the large ducts near the surface. The flukes were identified as Eurytrema pancreaticum from the size of the isolated flukes, the ratio of the ventral sucker size to the oral one and the lobular state of the testis. Histologically, mucosal detachment was seen largely in the affected ducts with extremely mild infiltrations of lymphocytes and eosinophil to the propria mucosal layer and the wall, and without apparent changes such as hyperplasia of the glands of the mucosa and thickening of the wall. Although the exocrine parenchyma was atrophied at the surrounding regions of the dilated ducts with a decrease of the zymogen granules in the acinar cells, the interlobular connective tissue was in edematous expansion and hyperplasia of the connective tissue and cell infiltration at the periductal and interlobular area were mild. In the present case, degeneration of the pancreatic tissue and inflammatory changes were extremely poor. Therefore, the ductal and periductal changes may be caused by the chronic persistent physical pressure due to the numerous intraductal flukes.
