The article reports on the development of the Latvian State Forest Research institute Silava (LSFRI Silava) in connection with its long-term research results and expansion of financial possibilities. The personnel capacity, advanced level of the supplied knowledge and its competitiveness as well as possibilities of extending international cooperation are considered as the main result of the increased funding. The long-term personnel politics has succeeded in growth of the number of the scientific staff - at the beginning of 2009 there were 55 senior researchers, researchers and scientific assistants. In the year 2008, the scientific personnel were involved in 68 research projects, of which 56 were acquired in public competitions. In the same year, the medium-term development strategy of LSFRI Silava was worked out, discussed within the forestry sector, and accepted by the Ministry of Agriculture. The strategy defines the mission and future vision of the institute as well as its main operation and research directions. The article also presents the latest, most significant results of the main research directions: forest tree breeding, silviculture, forest ecology, forest resources management, forest protection, forest regeneration and establishment, forest operation, wildlife management, and forest non-wood products.
