In Latvia, perennial grasslands are occupied over 800 000 ha and almost half of them pastures. They are both natural and also cultivated areas. Soil pH, amount of potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) in soil is the main indicators of soil for choosing most suitable grasses species that give the best yield. Nothing less significant factor is also animal breed - dairy cows, meat cattle, sheep, and horses - for them pastures provided. Important is also the technology of feed preparation: green feed, dry hay, haylage, silage as well as duration of sward use. For the development of high-yielding, perennial, high value and vitamin-rich sward would be chosen five or six grass species accordingly soil properties. The sowed cultivated pastures most often have been established in natural meadows or pasture areas after the melioration works as well as that previously are used as arable land. The best sowing time of grasses is early spring, when the soil contents no lack of moisture for seed germination.
