The memories and reports of the scientists (N.Bērziņa, A.Ozols, R. Kušaks, V.Baumane, V.Beķere, I.Stroža, A.Atlāvins, V.Cerbule, E.Tauciņš, A.Svilāne) of the Animal Biochemistry and Physiology Laboratory about research and investigation work, education work, participation in conferences, symposiums and workshops, administrative and social work from foundation until nowadays are analysed in this book. Research directions: (1) physiology and biochemistry of feeding and digestion in mammals and poultry; (2 )synergistic and antagonistic interaction mechanisms of nutrients [minerals (Zn, Cd, Se, Fe, Cu, Ca) and vitamins (A, D, E, C), etc.]; (3) regulation of heavy metal assimilation in organism and mechanisms for removal of metal loads; (4) metal-binding proteins and their role in adaptation processes during environmental pollution by heavy metals; (5) evaluation of natural and adaptive immunity in birds acted upon by heavy metals and mega doses of vitamins (A, D, C, etc.), using a designed test-system; (6) oxidative stress due to heavy metals (Cd, Fe, etc.) and mega doses of vitamins (C, A, etc.), the effect of pro-oxidant and antioxidant balance on oxidative stress development in organism; (7) estimation of changing of tissue reactivity caused by heavy metals and mega doses of ascorbic acid; (8) morphological changes in organs and tissues produced by heavy metals and mega doses of vitamins.
