In 2008, from July to October an experiment with artificial substrates was conducted in the River Salaca downstream, which was a result of substrate fouling succession: first a substrate overgrown with microscopic protozoa diatoms (mainly Cocconeis spp.), which further changed the macroscopic overgrow-forming green algae. In Salacas downstream, where the mainly characterized lithoreophilous invertebrate species complex, were also found psammophilous and phytophilous species.
