Characterization of oryzasnp accessions for response to reproductive-stage drought stress

Drought is a major constraint to rainfed rice production in Asia. While rice is more sensitive to drought compared with other cereals, large genotypic variation in tolerance exists within the cultivated gene pool. Rapid advances in molecular technologies provide a way to harness this genetic diversity. The oryzasnp project, a collaboration between the International Rice Functional Genomics Consortium (IRFGC)and Perlegen Life Siences, has identified a large proportion of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (snps) present in 20 diverse rice accessions. Here, the authors report the phenotyping of the accessions for response to water deficits. Rice is most susceptible to drought at the reproductive stage. The effect of drought on yield differs according to intensity and duration of stress and growth stage. In this study oryzasnp accessions were characterized in terms of response to reproductive stage drought stress under upland field and greenhouse conditions. The 20 snp-genotyped accessions were subdivided into four phenology groups. Sowing was staggered to synchronize the time of flowering with the stress treatment. Data on key physiological processes and yield components were obtained to identify the main causes of the yield decline. This approach is now being applied on a larger scale with more than 500 accessions to be snp-genotyped. The phenotypic data generated in this study will be important in fully exploiting the genomic information for genotype-phenotype associations for drought traits.
