The performance of improved corn Open Pollinated Varieties (OPVs) was evaluated both on-station and on-farm in six sites of Northern Mindanao. These OPVs include the white, yellow and glutinous corn varieties. This study is aimed at identifying appropriate production management technologies for commercial corn production in the region's different corn growing environments. Best white OPVs are exhibited by IES 8912, CMU var 12, USM var 10 and USM var 14 with average yields of 5.43, 4.75, 4.43 and 4.42 t/ha, respectively. For yellow OPVs, Tupi yellow and IES Cn5 obtained average yield of 4.38 t/ha and 4.02 t/ha, respectively. Glutinous OPVs generally have lower yield which ranges from 1.98-2.63 t/ha due to its susceptibility to leaf blight (75% infection) at 82 DAP. Results from on-farm study of white OPVs showed a significant difference in yield against the farmer's variety. CMU var 10 and USM var 10 obtained average grain yield of 3.51 t/ha and 3.68 t/ha, respectively against the farmer's variety. Thus, the yield of introduced white OPVs is 132% more than the existing farmer's variety. Findings from this study showed the feasibility of farmers to use the introduced white and yellow corn OPV's following the appropriate production management technologies.
