Changes in photosynthetic capacity and efficiency and the chlorophyll content were examined during ontogeny of Zostera japonica, Z. marina, Z. asiatica and Phyllospadix iwatensis seedlings. Leaf chlorophyll levels were higher in young leaves and lower in old leaves. Measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence in vivo revealed that the optimal quantum efficiency (Fsubv/Fsubm) and effective quantum efficiency ('F/Fm') of PSII decreased significantly in senescent leaves. Result on non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was higher in young leaves indicating a strong photoprotective mechanism. The results of this study suggests that the photosynthetic performance in seagrasses are strongly dependent on leaf age.
