In line with the National Rice Self-Sufficiency Plan, Bohol Rice UP! Upat Pataas aims to enhance the productivity of rice production systems and attain food security and poverty alleviation in Bohol. This collaboration of DA-PhilRice with STRIVE Foundation and selected LGUs seeks to develop the technical knowledge of rice farmers to increase average yield from 2.32 mt/ha to 4 mt/ha through Location-Specific Technology Development (LSTD) using PalayCheck and Palayamanan Farming Systems. In the first phase of the project, the socio-economic component covered two-season rice-based baseline cost and returns survey of 325 farmer participants disaggregated by municipality and program type (PhilRice-led LSTD and ATI-led PFS) in eight sites within five municipalities, namely Alicia, Candijay, Guindulman, Pilar, and Ubay. The analyses of the dataset generated by the cost and return survey were grouped into five: socio-demographic and farm characteristics, input-output coefficients and farm budgets, subsistence level carrying capacity, anthropometric indicators, and food nutritional intakes. Initial findings showed than mean yields for LTSD were 2.8 mt/ha (WS) and 2.6 mt/ha (DS) while PFS were 3.2 mt/ha (WS) and 3.0 mt/ha (DS). Moreover, rice production at farm level in LSTD and PFS sites were generally a profitable activity across yield level, season and point of sale. To date, 20 LSTD expansion sites were implemented to fast track the institution's goal of rice self-sufficiency by 2013. Data on existing and expansion sites serves as means in monitoring and evaluating the impact of the project relative to rice productivity, attainment of rice self-sufficiency and poverty alleviation.
