A quantitative characterization of seeds from 34 pea (Pisum sativum L.) accessions was performed by sodium dodecyl sulphate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) to explore the level of genetic variation in pea. SDS-PAGE results showed significant variations in minor bands. Variations were also noted in the density of some common bands. The electrophoretic banding profile of pea seed proteins provided a powerful tool for estimating diversity that exists in the genotypes. Breeding programme primarily depends upon genetically diverse genotypes with high yield potential. Thus these variations can further be used for producing new hybrids of desired traits. Phylogenetic analysis of Pisum sativum L. based on SDS-PAGE revealed that genetic diversity is independent of origin or source. Cluster analysis showed that many genotypes from the same origin were grouped separately.
