Relationship between sulphur fertilization glucosinolate content and infection level of seeds of spring oilseed rape Margo with Alternaria brassicae

Material for analyses was the spring oilseed rape Margo seeds coming from a three-year experiment established at the Experiment Station of Cultivar Evaluation in Chrzastowo near Naklo (Poland). Effects of fertilization of spring oilseed rape Margo with sulphur were studied in 2001-2003 in a system of randomized sub-blocks with 4 replications. The fertilizer was applied directly to soil or as foliar application. The first treatment was also accompanied by foliar application of magnesium and boron. The crop was analysed for the content of glucosinolates and the infection rate of the seeds with Alternaria brassicae. It was shown that most fertilization variants used did not affect significantly the total content of glucosinolates in seeds. Only a direct application of sulphur to soil increased the content of progoitrin. A high negative correlation between the concentration of alkenyl glucosinolates, such as progoitrin, gluconapin and glucobrassicanapin, in seeds and their resistance toward the Alternaria brassicae was found. A direct application of sulphur to soil was found to be the best fertilization system because in this case seed infection with A. brassicae, as compared with the control, was the lowest
