Different aspects of inhibition of growth and photosynthesis of maize (Zea mays L.) by the phosphonate herbicide sulphosate, 2: Leaf canopy manipulation

The effects of the herbicide sulphosate on growth, dry weight accumulation and partitioning, and phytosynthesis of maize plants subjected to source-sink leaf canopy manipulation were investigated. Growth and accumulation of dry weight were found to correlate significantly only with stem mass ratio (SMR) and root volume (Vr), while a significant negative correlation was found for leaf mass ratio (LMR), which is consistent with the uneven distribution of carbohydrate metabolism in maize plants. As the root is where cytokinins, the plant hormones essential for maintaining photosynthetic structures, are synthesized, we assumed that the root status under stress caused by the herbicide sulphosate could be one of the factors of stability/sensitivity of photosynthesis/photosynthetic structures of plants exposed to that herbicide. It is especially interesting that additional mineral nutrition acts protectively on the morphology and functioning of the photosynthetic system in maize plants treated with sulphosate. Such findings coincide with a possible function of the cytokinin phytohormones synthesized at the root during plant reactions to stress caused by the herbicide sulphosate, although a so-called tissue dilution effect should not be excluded as a possible cause of increased plant tolerance to sulphosate under conditions of additional mineral nutrition.
