The lowest average wheat yield in both Serbia (RS) and Croatia (RC) over the 2000-2007 period was produced in 2003, amounting to 2.29 t/ha (RS) and 2.96 t/ha (RC), being 34% and 28%, respectively, below the mean. The specific weather conditions unfavourable for wheat in 2002/2003 (means for Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Osijek and Zagreb) include substantial deviations from the long-term mean. The amount of precipitation (October-June) was 349 mm or 28% below the ltm , whereas the mean air temperature was 8.8 deg C or 0.8 deg C above. February was extremely cold (-2.9 deg C or 4.9 deg C below the ltm). The rainfall and average air temperature recorded in the following three months (March-May) were as low as 50 mm, accounting for 30% of the ltm, and 12.3 deg C or 1.1 deg C above the mean, respectively. The rainfall deficiency and the temperature shock continued into June (47 mm and 24 deg C; ltm 84 mm and 19.3 deg C).
