The ability of some cyanobacteria to produce toxic substances and examples associated with human and animal health problems have raised the position of cyanobacteria in the priorities for the management and protection of water quality. This paper reviews the results of basic eutrophication parameters and occurrences of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in surface fresh waters in Vojvodina region during the period of 2005-2006. The results showed that more than 50% of the investigated water ecosystems were found in toxic blooming state. Very high degrees of primary production (eutrophic and hypertrophic level) and high alkaline phosphatase activity were recorded in these fresh waters. It has significant negative ecological impacts to fresh waters and presents potential health hazard what fundamentally limits their exploitation.
