The effect of concentrate nature on short-term evolution of ruminal pH was determined on 3 fistulated growing rams, assigned to a Latin square experimental design. The diets consisted in 1 kg alfalfa hay and 0.63 kg compound feed based on ground corn (C), ground barley (B) or wheat bran (WB). Ruminal pH was determined right after sampling, which was done every 2 hours, 14 hours after feeding (1 meal/day, at 7 a.m.). The analyze of pH evolution revealed a large day-to-day and individual variability and also a significant effect of diet: the group WB expressed smaller decrease of pH comparing to groups C and B (0.54 versus 1.98 or 2.09 hours x pH units), which is in correlation with the content of the fed diets in degradable starch and NDF.
