In Mt. Tumba in southern Serbia a group of soils on spilites, specific substrate formed by submarine lava intrusion into unconsolidated schist, was segregated. A pedosequence was established consisting of lithosol - regosol distric - ranker distric regolithic - distric cambisol. Regosol distric, (A) - R, occurs on terrains with steeper slopes, where erosion is pronounced. Ranker distric regolithic, Aum - C - R, is found on soil surfaces protected by grass cover or forest stands. Humus-accumulative horizon is loamy in texture, while transitional horizon is sandy loam with higher percentage of skeleton. Soil is acid, content of humus is medium, as well as that of N, while P and K are present in low contents. Distric cambisol, Aum-(B)v-(B)vC-C, is medium deep soil, formed on less steep slopes. In its texture humus horizon is loam, cambic clay loamy, transitional horizon is also loam of weakly expressed structure, while substrate is loamy sand very skeletal and schisted spilite. Soil properties are: good water retention capacity, high pH, medium humus content and low values for P and K. The contents of trace elements are below the maximum allowable concentrations.
