Field surveys were undertaken in Guneid, Sennar and Assalaya sugar estates between April and July of season 200012001 to assess the present levels of smut infection in the field, caused by the fungus Ustilago scitminea (Syd.). Mean smut infection levels were 0.77%, 3.55% and 0.99% for Guneid. Sennar and Assalaya sugar schemes, respectively. Highest smut infections were always associated with first ratoon crops at all locations, but a little lower 111 the plant cane and second ratoon crops of the variety CO527. Therefore, a cheap and better control strategy for this disease should incorporate the gradual replacement of the variety CO527 with CO6806 and CO997 or any other variety with good tolerance or resistance to smut in all sugar estates
