Effect of water-stress on growth of three groundnut (Arachis hypogaea l.) cultivars under semi-desert conditions of Shambat (Sudan)

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of water-stress on the growth of three groundnut cultivars (Kiriz, MH383 and Sodari). It was carried out, during the summers of 1996/97 and 1997/98, in the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Shambat, Sudan, in a split-plot design. Water-stress (irrigation every 21 days) was applied at 50% flowering, at pegging and at pod filling stage. A non-stressed treatment (irrigated every ten days) was used as a control. The growth components affected by water-stress were plant height, number of primary branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, number of pegs/plant and dry matter production. The number of secondary branches/plant was not affected. There were significant differences between the cultivars in the number of secondary branches/plant and the number of leaves/plant in both seasons
