Evaluation of stomp (pendimethalin) and goal (oxyfluorfen) for pre emergence weed control in onion nursery

Experiments were undertaken at Shambat Research Station Farm during the three winter seasons, 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2006/07, to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of Stomp (pendimethalin) and Goal (oxyfluorfen) on weed control in onion nursery. Onion (cv. Saggai) seeds were sown on the first week of December in the three seasons at a seed rate of 5 kg/fed. Stomp (Pendimethalin) at 0.28, 0.37 and 0.46 kg a.i/fed and Goal (Oxyfluorfen) at 0.037, 0.050 and 0.062 kg a.i/fed were applied preemergence after sowing as aqueous spray. Weeded and unweeded control treatments were included for comparison. Stomp at 0.28 _ 0.46 kg a.i/fed gave excellent (88 _ 99%) control of grasses throughout the season and excellent (88-90) to good (58-71%) control of broad- leaved weeds early and late in the season, respectively. Stomp at 0.28 _ 0.46 kg a.i/fed increased the number of onion leaves and leaf length compared to the unweeded control. Goal at 0.05 _ 0.06 kg a.i/fed gave excellent control of grasses (90-100 %) early in the season and displayed good control (76-78 %) of grasses late in the season and attained excellent effect on broad- leaved weeds (96-100%) throughout the season. Fresh and dry weight of green leaves of onion seedlings and number of onion bulbs were also increased in herbicides treated plots compared to unweeded plots. Unrestricted weed growth decreased onion yield by about 50% compared to the weeded control. Stomp and Goal treatments at all rates tested out yielded the unweeded control and gave yields comparable to the weeded control
