Quantity and quality of yield, which depend on the genetically inherited tolerance of a particular genotype to diseases and pests, are considered as the most important aims in majority of breeding programs. A successful breeding requires appropriate method and adequate genetic materials. For this reason, it is crucial to have reliable data about the existing germplasm. In order to evaluate the tolerance of maize germplasm to plant diseases and pests, systematic investigation was carried out at the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. In field conditions, based on the artificial infection by the fungus Fusarium subglutinans (Wollenw. and Reinking) P. E. Nelson, Toussoun and Marasas, we tested 82 inbreds and 80 populations. The most tolerant inbreds were intercrossed in order to find out their combining ability and to develop tolerant hybrids. We also tested the tolerance of 108 inbreds and 128 populations to the fungus Exserohilum turcicum (Pass.) K. J. Leonard and Suggs. The genetic recombination of the inbreds tolerant to NCLB with the inbreds which were not tolerant but were characterised by other desired agronomic traits, in the following generations, some tolerant progenies with good agronomic traits were developed.
