Under observation of animal health, ethology and welfare, the requirements of providing animal -friendly rearing conditions are ever increasing in the European Union. Consumers of food of animal origin are becoming more alert to the responsible treatment of animals. Animal health and welfare are the preconditions for quality of food of animal origin, and thereby, important public health aspects. This paper presents some of the most prominent activities within the European Union ensuring animal protection and welfare in meat production.
