The germinability of five species (Zea mays L., Lycopersicon esculentum MILL., Pisum sativum L., Papaver somniferum L. and Linum usitatissimum L.) with different accession numbers, mostly Slovak and former Czechoslovakian origin were tested. Genetic resources were stored in the Genebank in two collections: active collection at +4 deg C and in a base collection at –17 deg C in a glass container with silica gel. The germinability of seed samples in the base collection was controlled after 10 years storage and in the active collection after 5 years. Viability was monitored by conducting a germination test on a fixed sample, 100 seeds were tested in two replications. For the germination test two methods were used: the top-of-paper and between-paper method. Samples of seeds were placed into the climatic chamber at the recommended temperature for the selected species. From the results of the two replicates the mean percentage germination was calculated. T-tests were carried out using the SPSS 8.1 for Windows. The purpose of the present work was to detect the effect of seed conservation in long-term storage and at different temperatures and compare the variation in seed longevity between selected plant species. The results showed no significant influence from the time in storage, to the viability of the selected species in the active collection and significant differences between viability of selected species at different storage temperature (active and base collection).
