This article evaluates potential assumptions and real growth opportunities concerning sales of Slovak agricultural commodities at international markets. The analysis has shown that even despite increased subsidization and full liberalization of trade after accession the SR to the European Union, the competitiveness of our products still needs to develop. The main reason behind this is the poor efficiency of agrarian production in comparison with Visegrad Group countries and lack of innovation activities. Processing industry is the main contributor to the worsening deficit of trade balance. Pursuant to the analysis of commodity structure it is possible to define key problems affecting the SR foreign agrifood trade: not used processor capacities in the SR, problems concerning relations between suppliers and customers at domestic market, CAP reforms with a view to eliminate overproduction in the EU, a constantly increase of import of processed food products with higher value added, accession the SR to the European Monetary Union and outbreak of world economic crisis.
