EFFECT OF TWO TYPES OF HOUSE COVERS ON HEAT STRESS OF BROILERS DURING THE DRY SEASON | EFECTO DE DOS TIPOS DE COBERTURA DE GALPONES EN EL ESTRES CALORICO EN POLLOS DE ENGORDE DURANTE LA EPOCA SECA

Se evaluó durante la estación de seca el efecto de dos tipos de coberturas de galpones en el estrés calórico y rasgos de comportamiento con 800 pollos del híbrido Cobb 500 Estándar, repartidos en dos tratamientos con 10 repeticiones, mediante un diseño completamente aleatorizado. Los tratamientos consistieron en una cobertura de aluminio o de acerolit. Las aves de cada tratamiento se ubicaron en 10 puestos individuales de 2x2 m2, ubicados en los extremos de un galpón experimental, con una densidad de 40 pollos por puesto (10 aves/m2). El ensayo tuvo una duración de 42 días y la alimentación fue ad libitum. Se encontró que a 20 cm del techo y del piso, las coberturas de acerolit lograron disminuir en 0.6 y 0.3ºC la temperatura respectivamente, en comparación con las de aluminio. Durante el período de iniciación, no se observaron diferencias significativas en ninguno de los parámetros productivos evaluados. Durante el de engorde se observó una tendencia del tratamiento acerolit a mejorar el comportamiento productivo de las aves. Sin embargo, solo se observaron diferencias significativas (P0.01) en la conversión alimentaría. En la última semana el índice de mortalidad fue 5 veces mayor en las láminas de aluminio en comparación con las de acerolit (0.25%). Se concluye que aun cuando no se apreciaron diferencias en algunos rasgos de comportamiento de las aves, la cobertura acerolit tuvo un mayor efecto sobre la reducción del estrés calórico, permitiendo que los animales usaran más eficientemente el alimento.

A total of 800 broilers of the genotype Cobb 500 Standard were allocated at random into two treatments with 10 replications to evaluate the influence of two types of roof on heat stress and performance traits during the dry season. The treatments were a cover made either from aluminium or acerolit. The birds were housed in ten 2x2 m2 cages placed in both sides of a experimental stable. There was 10 birds/m2 (40 chickens per cage). The trial lated 42 days and feed intake was ad libitum. It was found that acerolit covers decreased in 0.6 and 0.3oC air temperature at 20 cm from the bottom or the top of the cage respectively, as compared to aluminium covers. There were no significant differences between treatments in bird's performance traits during the starting period. However, acerolit covers determined a significantly (P0.01) better feed conversion and appeared to improve other performance traits during the fattening period and overall. Moreover, aluminium covered birds showed a higher mortality (1.25%) as compared to those housed under acerolit (0.25%0 during the last week on test. It is concluded that although there were no marked differences in some performance traits of the chickens, the acerolit cover had a major effect in the reduction of heat stress,therefore allowing a more efficient use of feed by the birds.
