We studied the behavior of 1799 cows from 32 farms in Northern Portugal, during the milking, focusing our attention on the frequency of steps and associated effects. Each cow showed an average of 7 steps per milking, where only about 3% of the animals showed no steps. And about 57% of cows had a milking frequency of less than six steps. The type of milking (P<0,001), floor of the milking parlor (P<0,01), number of lactation (P<0,01) and lameness (P<0,001) revealed significant effects on the frequency of steps in milking. Tandem milking (4,53+/-4,07) and frizz concrete (4,04+/-3,25) accounted for fewer steps, while cows with four or more lactations (8,02+/-7,69) and lameness (15,27+/-13,21) were associated with a greater number of steps.
