Due to cost increase of straw, lamb feedlots had proposed to avoid its use during the fattening stage. The objective of this study was to analyze the use of straw as an enrichment material in light lambs. The study was carried in two experiments. The design of experiment 1 included two treatments and two replicates with six male lambs each (17,20 (+/-0,2) kg live weight). One of the areas was provided with straw while the other had none. Feeding was ad libitum with concentrate. The welfare indicators analyzed were cortisol level, stereotypic behaviours, agonistic interactions & affiliative interaction (from video recording). No significant differences in productive performance (live weight and concentrate consumption, carcass weight) and in meat quality (meat pH & bruising) between the two groups were observed. The lambs housed without straw presented higher levels of cortisol at the end of treatment and stereotypic behaviours indicating a poorer welfare. The lambs without straw presented higher frequency of affiliative behaviours. On the experiment 2, 24 lambs were divided in two groups to was analyzed the effect of same treatments on others parameters of meat quality. The straw did not affect the back tissue composition, texture, colour and cooking loss.
