Synthetic vitamin E (all-rac-alpha-Tocoferol) is the most common source for livestock feed, but recent studies demonstrated that the relative bioactivity of natural vitamin E (RRR-alpha-Tocoferol) is 1.3 - 2.6 times higher than the synthetic form in pigs. This experiment evaluated the natural vitamin E (NvitE) added to the drinking water in lactation and in nursery phases, compared with a synthetic source (SvitE) in feed, in a ratio of inclusion 1:3 . In nursery the combination of both effects was studied, source of vitE in the sows and in the piglets. In lactation, the source of vitE did not affect productive performance of piglets. In nursery, no effects were observed in average daily gain (ADG) and feed:conversion ratio (FCR) due to the source of vitE supplemented to the sows. However, both ADG and FCR were negatively affected in NvitE piglets during the prestarter phase (P<0.05) . In the starter phase NvitE group compensated the differences in productive performance and showed higher ADG and lower FCR than SvitE group . As conclusion, the use of NvitE in a ratio 1:3 compared with SvitE did not affect productive performance in the nursery phase, confirming the higher bioactivity of NvitE.
