The yew (Taxus baccata L.) in central region of Portugal - Serra da Estrela sub-region

anglais. The yew (Taxus baccata L.) has been considered for a long time as a referenced species to the study area. The area covers the Serra da Estrela (Portugal). Nowadays, in this region, the yew population is clearly declining and there isn’t natural regeneration. The estimated spontaneous population is less than fifty individuals distributed sparsely and seldom forming true clusters, indifferent to substrate, in areas with Mediterranean influences but also with Atlantic influences. The ecologic knowledge of the considered population is yet incipient, which doesn’t allow a detailed characterization of the current yew population. The present work aims to describing the yew distribution and the study area, also characterizing the Estrela range. The importance of the main factors that impair the regeneration of populations are also addressed, as well as the definition of the goals on the species management plan. A synthesis of the work achieved since 2008, the beginning of the present project, is also presented. Due to the reduced number of individuals, an active management for the yew population at a regional scale is required. With the establishment of the present management plan, we propose an active strategy concerning the yew individuals, as biological, cultural, esthetic and genetic heritage, keeping in mind an increasing conservation status of this population for the coming generations.

espagnol; castillan. El tejo (Taxus baccata L.) ha sido considerado durante mucho tiempo como una especie de referencia para el área de estudio. El área cubre la Serra da Estrela (Portugal). Hoy en día, en esta región, la población de tejo es claramente descendente y no hay regeneración natural. La población espontánea estimada es menor de cincuenta individuos distribuidos de forma dispersa y rara vez formando verdaderos grupos, independientemente del sustrato, en áreas con influencia mediterránea pero también con influencia atlántica. El conocimiento ecológico de la población considerada es todavía incipiente, lo que no permite una caracterización detallada de la actual población de tejo. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo describir la distribución del tejo y el área de estudio, también caracteriza la Serra da Estrela. También se aborda la importancia de los principales factores que impiden la regeneración de las poblaciones, así como la definición de los objetivos en el plan de gestión de la especie. También se presenta una síntesis de la labor realizada desde el 2008 que fue cuando comenzó el presente proyecto. Debido al reducido número de individuos, se requiere una gestión activa de la población de tejos a escala regional. Con el establecimiento del plan de gestión actual, se propone una estrategia activa con respecto a los tejos individuales, como biológica, cultural, estética y genética, teniendo en cuenta un incremento del estado de conservación de las poblaciones para las generaciones venideras.
