Five hundred sheep obtained from Arsi and Welo administrative regions and slaughtered at the Addis Ababa Abattoir from October 1979 to March 1980 were examined for Dictyocaulus filaria and 59.4% were found positive. The results indicate that this nematod is an important veterinary problem of sheep in Arsi and Welo administrative regions in Ethiopia. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture (5) report of 1972 Dictyocaulus filaria infests a large number of sheep and it is often found in association with other parasitic infections. Sheep suffering from severe cases of verminous pneumonia around Addis Ababa were examined by the Shola Disease Investigation Laboratory (1) and were found highly infested with D. filaria in the months of September through December. Even though the problem of dictyocaulosis is serious in sheep in Ethiopia, complete picture of its incidence and the loss it entails within the context of Ethiopia is still lacking. In this work an attempt has been made to study the prevalence and intensity of infestation by D. filaria of sheep that were obtained from Arsi and Welo administrative regions and slaughtered at the Addis Ababa Abattoir between October 1979 and March 1980.
