Choosing of rootstock is one of the most important preconditions for developing of sustainable and high productive plum orchard. This is aroused the necessity to investigate the influence of different plum rootstocks on the cultivars winterhardiness. Trial was conducted with the aim to clarify the changes of dry matter content in the annual offshoots during the wintering period as the main physiological aspect influencing winterhardiness. Cultivar 'Kubanskaya Kometa' was investigated on 16 rootstocks during the period of 2008 – 2009 and 2009 – 2010 in Pūre HRC. Sampling was done five times per wintering period and dry matter content (mg gE-1) was determinate in the laboratory. Differences of dry matter content were stated as statistically significant between months. Significant differences were not observed between trees on different rootstocks. Less fluctuating dry matter content for trees grafted on GF5/22 (509 – 519 mg gE-1) and St. Julien Noir (499 – 506 mg gE-1) was noted. It indicated the suitability of these rootstocks for changeable meteorological conditions. In its turn highest fluctuations of dry matter content were observed for trees grafted on rootstock Ackermann (495 – 513 mg gE-1). The changes of dry matter content in both wintering periods indicated differences in physiological processes under the influence of meteorological conditions. Increasing of dry matter content during the December and January was observed in both years. The most probably clarification for this fact is possibility of deep dormancy during this period.
