Reed canary grass was used for production of pellets. Lignin is a natural astringent that holds a granule together. The aim of the research was to assess the factors influencing the content of lignin in the reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) first year swards. Field trial using variety 'Marathon' of reed canary grass was sowing on 12 August 2008 and 29 April 2009, but using variety 'Bamse' – only on 29 April 2009 in Agricultural Science Centre of Latgale. Samples of yield were taken on 12 October 2009 and 6 April 2010. The content of ash was determined by using the accelerated standard method. Lignin content in samples was determined using the method of Classon. The content of ash in samples taken in autumn was larger than in ones taken in spring, and so was the harvest itself. The content of lignin was larger in the samples taken in spring. Between lignin and ash content there has been stated a medium tight negative correlation (p is less than 0.05). Effect of sowing time on lignin content of samples taken in April was noted 10% (p is less than 0.05), but impact of N fertilizer rate was 33% (p is less than 0.001).
