After secondary education, young people must choose their life path; therefore, it is very important to consider all options and do the right thing. The aim of this research study is to find out more about the life path plans of the holders of secondary school certificates as well as the range of their plans, and to explore which factors help them to roll out their plans. The two hypotheses are: 1) the majority of young people choose to study at an institution of higher education; 2) the main reason for studying at an institution of higher education is to find a job in the future. The first hypothesis was supported by the findings testifying that the majority of young people after secondary education have chosen to study at an institution of higher education. However, the second hypothesis was not supported - young people choose to study at an institution of higher education in order to enhance their gains and talents. The study was carried out on issues ranging from young people`s age periods, their adaptation into society, life paths, choice of higher education institutions, young people in the labour market, young people having families/homes, their emigration from Latvia to young lives in Latvia. The theoretical framework of the study was based on the Preference Theory. This theory demonstrates that nowadays men and women can choose their own lifestyle and paths for their lives freely. This theory was developed precisely due to the changes in the social and economic conditions. There were two groups of respondents: school leavers in 2010 and holders of school completion certificates from 2005 and 2006. One-hundred twenty people in total were involved in the study. This research allowed comparing two different groups of young people on their choices in two different social and economic timescales. This research shows that in economically harder times, young people are thinking more about education and job opportunities abroad than teenagers who had made their choices in economically better times. Quantitative method was used to collect information in this research study.
