An international programme was initiated with the objectives to document and make available the existing wealth of information on plant resources of South-East Asia;to make operational a computerised data bank on plant resources of South-East Asia and to publish the results in an illustrated multi-volume handbook. It is an interdisciplinary project covering the fields of agriculture, horticulture and forestry. A network of offices in six South-East Asian countries has been established to achieve these objectives. The information gathered has been grouped into 19 commodity groups based on their primary uses. The data bank on plant resources has a total of 52,967 records as of 1998. Work on the 19 commodity groups was completed between 1989 and 2002, and published in 24 volumes. In total, 7,602 species have been described;6592 as major and 3023 as minor.
